What Do You Want To Do Before You Die?

The title kind of presents this melancholy tone, but that's really not what it's about. The true goal is for you to really understand yourself and reflect just a little on what you want out of life and not what others around you want for you.

I was watching a TED talk recently where a girl went around asking strangers somewhat personal questions. Her goal or mission was to skip the small talk and get to the big talk; conversations that help you get to know someone quickly. Her first question to those strangers is also my first question to you, and that is what do you want to do before you die?

And I want you to really take a moment to just sit and think about this. After you've had a chance to reflect, be honest with yourself. Are you on the road to where you want to be in this life?

As you can probably imagine, some of her random conversations with those strangers got pretty emotional. The things that you do from day to day should get you a step closer to your goals and where you envision yourself.

Some jobs are actually pretty great and can give a fulfilling life. Especially, if you work around great people and it's not a drag for you to want to come to work every day. But, if you really aren't happy, then really take time to think about what is important to you. Of course, your bills need to be paid so leaving your job might not be an immediately practical solution. But you can do things on the side, outside of your job, that bring you happiness and help you build the life you feel you deserve.

My final question for you on this day is, If you knew that you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?

Give these questions some serious thought today. Try to come up with at least one goal that you want to achieve; something that will move you in the direction of the life you want or the person you want to be. If you've set goals before and have struggled to reach them, maybe it had nothing to do with your physical ability to accomplish a task or how smart you are. There truly is a foundational mindset that is necessary for setting the right goals and achieving them.

Here are a few small tips of what not to do when trying to achieve your goals:

  1. Don't set a goal deadline without creating a schedule. Break the goal into smaller, more manageable goals that you can accomplish incrementally.
  2. Don't keep your goal to yourself. The more public the commitment, the more likely you are to see it through.
  3. Don't wait until you reach the final goal before rewarding yourself. If you don't find a sense of pleasure in the journey, it will be a difficult path to stay on. Small win add up to big wins.
